How to get 30-day security deposit holds with Stripe

Enso can hold a guest's security deposit for up to 30 days on Visa and Amex cards. Card networks only allow this when your Stripe account is set up as a lodging business, with the merchant category code (MCC) 7011, Hotels, Motels, and Resorts.

Do I need to do anything?

  • New Stripe accounts created through Enso are set to MCC 7011 automatically. If you picked a different industry while setting up Stripe, check it with the steps below.

  • Stripe accounts you already had or connected earlier need to be changed by you. Follow the steps below.

Change your Stripe business category

1. Go to dashboard.stripe.com and sign in to the Stripe account connected to Enso. If you have more than one, use the one connected to Enso.

2. Click the gear icon (Settings) in the top right.

3. Under Your business, open Business details.

4. Find Industry or Merchant Category Code.

5. If you can edit Industry, set it to Hotels, Motels, and Resorts (MCC 7011) and save.

6. If the code is shown but locked, open Help, then Contact support. Ask Stripe to change your account to MCC 7011, Hotels, Motels, and Resorts, because you run short-term lodging, not real estate rental management. Stripe may ask for your business licence or website.

7. Once Stripe shows 7011, let us know through chat or at [email protected].

Good to know

  • Only holds placed after the change get the longer window. Holds already on a guest's card keep their current expiry.

  • Without MCC 7011, Visa and Amex holds usually last about 7 days.

  • If a hold expires before it is released, Enso places a new hold automatically. The guest may see this as a new pending charge on their card.

  • Holds are still placed 2 days before check-in. When the deposit is released after checkout is still set on each deposit product.
